San Francisco - Jewel of the West Coast

San Francisco, USA Add comments

San Francisco is a gem of a place to visit so some call it the jewel of the west coast. From the magnificent bayside vistas to the intimate, quirky cafes - there are many things that will make a trip to this city quite memorable.

Fisherman’s Wharf and the Golden Gate Bridge are the city’s two most well known attractions but there is so much more to San Francisco than these great landmarks.

Anyone here should hop on a Cable Car for an experience that is so… very San Francisco. Take a leisurely ride up and down the steep hills near Pier 39 and through Union Square and have a wonderful glance back at history - while seeing the latest sights.

This city is well-loved by artists and art lovers. Here you can watch some of the best opera and ballet in the world. For fine visual art you can visit The Legion of Honor and the M.H. de Young museum. But even several day will not be enough to see all the great works on display.

San Francisco offers young scientists something rare and delightful as well. The Exploratorium inside the Palace of Fine Arts has over 650 interactive and hands-on exhibits. Ranging from tornadoes you can touch to electrical experiments you shouldn’t. Both kids and adults will be delighted by a visit here.

For the nature lovers, there are many aquariums and the famed San Francisco Zoo. The Aquarium of the Bay allows views from under the bay of many colorful local species. On top seals enthusiastically applaud the penguins.

The San Francisco Zoo remains to be a highlight for visitors. Over 200 species - including rare lemurs and monkeys, snow leopards and white tigers, and other exotic animals roam the 100-acre attraction.

Down on Fisherman’s Wharf there’s much more to do than eat shrimp. Ghiradelli Square has the famous chocolate factory and ice cream shop that continues to pack in the crowds a hundred years after it opened

There is also some great shopping to do in San Francisco.  Union Square houses clothing, jewelry and many other kinds of shops. In terms of retail sales, San Francisco is fourth in volume in the whole country - so the choices are plenty and the bargains generous.

Dining and clubbing has been kind-of a tradition in San Francisco even before it was a city. Whether you crave for steak at the world-renowned Morton’s or vegetables from the Farmer’s Market, there is something for everyone. Down at the pier there’s plenty of great seafood that has helped make San Francisco a famous food destination.

The famous - or should we say infamous? - Haight Ashbury district is still an interesting jaunt. Once home of the hippies, Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin, the area still has a lot of character. You can still grab some great tie-dyed T-shirts alongside the Victorian houses.

For a view of real infamy, take a tour of Alcatraz. The prison, empty since 1963, still retains its grim allure.

And, of course, don’t leave without seeing - and walking across - the Golden Gate Bridge. This magnificent orange-vermilion structure is the perfect symbol for San Francisco. One of the world’s largest  and most beautiful bridges it continues to attract thousands of visitors, just as it had since the turn of the century.

Visit this jewel of the west coast and understand while you just may leave your heart in San Francisco. Here are other great destinations while in town:
