Most cities in America have a main street. New York has Times Square on Broadway… and Las Vegas has its famed Fremont Street.
Covered entirely by a huge canopy, the casino-lined street has over two million lights and a state-of-the-art sound system. Just walking through Fremont is a thrill for all senses. The combined sights and sounds can simply be called… well, electric. It is a Vegas-defining experience.
Millions of visitors each year have walked under the $70 million canopy. When you visit, expect the crowds. While there’s really enough room for everyone, you’re likely to bump shoulders as most can’t help but stare at the dazzling shows above.
Ninety feet overhead you’ll see a huge dancing array of LED lights. 12.5 million LEDs, to be exact. It’s a synchronized LED color sequence, accompanied by animation and video. One second it may change to a TV broadcast, the next could be a pupil-popping kaleidoscope.
The videos projected onto the Fremont canopy are quite innovative. Some notable ones: ‘The Drop’, a psychedelic ‘happening’ reminiscent of the ’60s, to ‘Area 51′, showing earthlings versus aliens. Others among my personal favorites: ‘Above and Beyond’ which gives visitors a view of the Earth from outer space; and ‘Fahrenheit at Night’ features one of the things Vegas is best known for: beautiful women.
The Fremont strip is also known for its quirky and colorful street signs. Among the better known Fremont Street signs is Glitter Gulch’s Vegas Vickie. It is pure classic Vegas - kitsch, fun, and silly.
After soaking up the sights and sounds while enjoying some Krispy Kreme from an outdoor patio, I like to do some shopping in the area. Fremont Street has dozens of stores, from small indoor venues to little kiosks. This is the perfect place to snap up trinkets to take home for the memories, and small mementos as gifts for friends back home. Touristy, yes, but a keen eye will spot you some very good shopping prizes.
Since the Fremont canopy is 1,400 feet long, you’re bound to miss something on your first visit. And that’s why so many visitors always plan on going back to relive this unique Las Vegas experience.
