New York is a beehive of a city, but it’s perfectly possible to find some spots that are calm and quiet, in the middle of the big city’s hustle and bustle. For example, you can catch Manhattan at its most peaceful if you begin your day with a walk on Madison Square Park. Here at Madison and 23rd you’ll find a quiet neighborhood with tree-lined streets. The five-acre park makes a perfect setting for outdoor brunch.
Just six blocks up is the architectural wonder, The Carlton. A perfect blend of new and old, the hotel lobby alone is a scenic wonder of rich brass and leather interiors in the Art-Deco style. You might also want to take a moment to stand outside and enjoy the lovely facade of this New York landmark.
The renovated and re-opened Morgan Library is just a leisurely walk up to 36th Street. The library is small, but well worth a tour. When banking luminary J.P. Morgan was still alive, it housed his impressive book collection and served as an office away from his uptown mansion. The last renovation took 3 years and was apparently well-planned and executed. It’s something to imagine that this museum-like library was once just someone’s private office and library.
If you’re inclined to browse more books, the New York Public Library - Science and Industry is at 34th Street. The book collection is extensive. Its surroundings also continue the peaceful tour up Madison.
Now that you’re fully awake, get ready for the shopping and dining part of the route.
Slide into Brooks Brothers at 42nd and Grand Central Station for a suit. Tailors here used to dress Abraham Lincoln. The tradition of fine tailoring continues and they are ready to make the perfect accoutrement even if you don’t have political ambitions. Ladies will not mind spending time - and money - at any of the nearby boutiques. But save some balance on that credit card for further uptown.
Now that you’re dressed for the occasion, you can have lunch at one of New York’s finest: the Gilt, at 50th Street. Located in the Villard Mansion dining room, now part of the New York Palace Hotel, the food and atmosphere are unmatched. You’re bound to see some celebrities at a nearby table. Reservations are a must.
Well fed, if a little less well-off (Gilt is pricey), get ready for some serious shopping. Looking for that leather bag you couldn’t find elsewhere? Coach is certain to have something that you’ll like. But do save some of your shopping budget to visit the nearby Prada.
Assuming you didn’t max out your credit cards already, Barney’s awaits 61st Street. Both men and women will find the service here tailored to their tastes. Another fashion landmark, Calvin Klein is just down at 60th Street.
Get someone to take the bags back to the hotel, though, because you’ll need at least one arm to carry a stellar vintage from Sherry-Lehman’s Wine and Spirits.
If you’re not exhausted or broke by now, you can continue on uptown to the Upper East Side to shop at Prada on 70th or Bang and Olufsen at 75th.
After a full, busy day, it’s nice to head back down to the Little Church at 29th. Say a little prayer of thanks for a great New York experience.
